Autism and Scouting Training Kit Materials

Copy of Autism and Scouting (2)

The Autism and Scouting Leadership Training Kit was developed by Autism Empowerment in 2013 with the direction of Autism Empowerment staff, volunteers and a Leadership Advisory Committee consisting of scouts, scouting leaders and volunteers from a variety of scouting organizations in the United States and Australia. We included educators, trainers and internationally known autism experts. Over half of the people on the Autism and Scouting Leadership Advisory committee are on the autism spectrum including one of our co-authors.

Autism Empowerment has a core belief that if you really want to get deeply engaged and help kids, teens and adults living with autism, Asperger syndrome or ASD, you need to actively include men, women and youth on the autism spectrum in the conversation. We have in the past. We do in the present. We will in the future.

Ordering the Autism and Scouting Leadership Kit

In 2013, Autism Empowerment received a generous $25,000 grant from the Autism Speaks Family Services Grant Program which allowed for Autism Empowerment to develop, produce and distribute 575 physical kits throughout the United States. As of December 3rd, 2014, all 575 initial kits have been distributed.  We are very grateful for these start-up project funds and for having our grassroots 501(c)3 recognized as a valued service provider to the Autism and Asperger communities.

Now it is time for funding round #2 so that every scouting unit in the country and world who wants one can have a copy!

We ARE looking for philanthropic organizations, corporate sponsors and individual donors who are willing to make a dedicated donation toward the production and shipping of additional kits. Ideally we’d like to be able to get a FREE kit into the hands of every scouting unit worldwide. If you know of someone who might be interested in donating to this cause (either for distribution in a particular area or to a particular demographic), please contact scouting@autismempowerment.org

In the meantime, for those looking for a kit, we also offer the manual available in PDF form for free download. We do ask you fill out a quick survey to get the PDF. This is to help us know where kits are going and to have a better idea of who we are serving.  Here is a link to that survey!  Please allow up to 72 hours from the time of submittal to receive an email with your PDF.

010611085517clipart_board_meetingThe Autism and Scouting Leadership Kit was produced with the input of a professional Leadership Advisory Committee consisting of scouting leaders, autism authors, educators and self-advocates, including youth on the spectrum involved in scouting. Committee members live in the United States and Australia. We hope these materials will also assist with retention and recruitment of youth on the autism spectrum.

Make a donation to support the Autism and Scouting Program

We need your help to produce more than the first 500 kits. The Autism and Scouting Program is part of the Autism Empowerment which is a 501 (c)3  non-profit organization and helps serve children, teens and adults around the world like the ones you see below:

We rely on public support to make all that we do happen. Donations can be earmarked to support a program or project within any of our programs. There are over 200,000 Scouting units within the USA alone including but not limited to: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts / Cub Scouts, Campfire USA, Baden Powell Service Association / BPSA, American Heritage Girls, Trail Life USA and Royal Rangers. There are also millions of scouts participating in scouting worldwide.

Your donation allows us to continue with the production, administration and shipping of these kits in order to help provide the best scouting experience possible to children, teens and adults on the autism spectrum.

Every single donation helps us continue to mission and which will bring us closer to making a  difference in every Scout and their Journey in Scouting who is on the Autism Spectrum.

Please note that Autism Empowerment and the Autism and Scouting Program do not provide medical or legal advice or services. We are also not affiliated with any scouting organization. As such, the information provided in the Autism and Scouting Leadership Training Kit is not a recommendation, referral or endorsement of any specific educational or therapeutic method and does not replace advice of medical, legal or educational professionals.

The Autism and Scouting Program of Autism Empowerment is intended to serve all scouting organizations which are interested in helping better the scouting experience for youth in their units who are on the autism spectrum. You will read, see and hear real examples from scouters worldwide from varying organizations. Because each scouting organization has its own program, the information in this kit is presented in a general way with the understanding that you may need to do some adaptation in order to tie in with the rules and practices of your particular scouting organization.
